The Bible tells us that we have all sinned and fall short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23). Because of this we are not able to get to God on our own terms. Being a good person and doing good works does not save us. Epesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves,it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast."
To be saved means that you have done what the Bible requires in Romans 10:9-10:"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Declaring "Jesus as Lord" means you are letting Him be the boss of your life.
Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins. The Bible says in 2Corinthiians 5:21 "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."
